Quests

Across the worlds of Written Realms Alpha, you will be offered the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of quests. Whether you are tasked with saving the world from a terrible dragon or getting strawberries for a delicious pie, this guide will get you started on the first steps to adventure.

Quests throughout Written Realms Alpha fall into two broad categories: one-time and repeatable. As the name implies, repeatable quests can be completed multiple times, though the time between available completions can vary between quests.

Quests can also require other quests and have level requirements. If you cannot start one, complete any prerequisite quests or return after reaching the required level.

The most common way to start a quest is with the enquire command:

enquire
enquire <mob>

This checks whether any mob in your room has a quest available.

In the augmented interface, an exclamation point (!) marks a character with a quest you can enquire about. Select the character to see an ENQUIRE action, or type the command yourself.

Not all quests can be triggered this way, so pay attention to what an NPC might be saying and to clues within the room or your inventory. More hidden quests might require that you say or do something specific.

After starting a quest, it is added to your quest log. This is a list of all your active quests, along with further information about each quest. Should you forget what you need to do—there is a lot of questing to be done, after all—you can refresh your memory here.

The quest log can be found in the client’s right sidebar on wide desktop screens, or within the menu on mobile. It separates Open Quests, Repeatable Quests, and Completed Quests. An entry can show the suggested level, quest giver, current summary, and the original instructions.

Re-read the entry whenever you are unsure what to do. Progress may come from defeating particular mobs, collecting items, visiting locations, using a custom action, or satisfying conditions that the world does not reveal directly.

Once you have satisfied a quest’s requirements, it can be completed with:

complete
complete <mob>

This attempts to complete a quest from a mob in the room that has one and for which you have completed all required objectives.

In the augmented interface, a question mark (?) marks a character with a quest ready to turn in.

You must be in the same room as the original quest giver, though not all quests can be completed simply with the command. Others may require you to do or say certain things. Refer to the quest log or the surrounding area and NPCs for clues.

A quest can provide a completion command other than complete. When it does, the augmented interface exposes that action on the quest giver when you inspect or select them. Quests can also respond to ordinary actions such as speaking, moving, giving an item, or interacting with a room detail, so pay attention to the quest log and the world’s own wording.

See Exploring and Interacting for targeting and custom actions, or Experience and Levels for the default progression table.
