Section titled “What is Written Realms Alpha?”Written Realms Alpha is a platform for interactive-fiction games. It is a modern, web-based take on multi-user dungeons, using WebSockets rather than Telnet as its connection protocol.
What is a MUD?
Section titled “What is a MUD?”MUD stands for multi-user dungeon. MUDs are games in which players interact with each other and with the game world through a text-based medium.
Can I connect with my own MUD client through Telnet?
Section titled “Can I connect with my own MUD client through Telnet?”At this time, clients can connect only through WebSockets. Anyone can build a WebSocket client to connect to the game or fork the existing client, but players primarily connect through the client at WrittenRealms.com.
Is Written Realms Alpha free?
Section titled “Is Written Realms Alpha free?”Yes. You can play and build worlds at no cost and without paywalls. Donations through the Written Realms Alpha Patreon are highly appreciated. They support server costs and, beyond that, improvements to the platform’s performance and reach.
Playing
Section titled “Playing”I could start only as a Warrior. How do I pick another class?
Section titled “I could start only as a Warrior. How do I pick another class?”Playing through the tutorial on the home page sets your class to Warrior. To create a character with another standard class, open Worlds, create a character in your chosen world’s lobby, and select another class from the class menu. Some worlds are classless or provide their own character options.
I found a bug. How do I report it?
Section titled “I found a bug. How do I report it?”Head to the Written Realms Alpha Discord and tell the staff in the #bugs channel. Screenshots, timestamps, and steps that reproduce the bug are especially helpful.
Building
Section titled “Building”How do I make my world multiplayer?
Section titled “How do I make my world multiplayer?”A new world is multiplayer by default. To make it single-player, clear Is Multiplayer when creating the world.
